SF Suicide Watch is an organization dedicated to preventing suicide and providing a safe space where anyone no matter their mental state, can have someone to talk to. The mission that the SFSW is dedicated to would be providing a safe place for people to gain knowledge on not just suicide, but self harm, suicidal thoughts and warnings, how to help someone, and get out of that mental state. The SF Suicide Watch does things like offer things for people to volunteer in, educate others and offer a place that people can call.

The SF Suicide Watch uses the strategies mobilizing and gaining allies. They use this by educating and spreading awareness and offering services so people in need can seek help, and people who want to help can volunteer. They chose these strategies because their organization affects society, and these strategies appeal to their audience in a way that attracts their attention, and provides a sense of comfort. These Strategies also gain attention which is what they need to be able to gain allies.
When Esty was asked about in depth calls about contemplating suicide she replied, ”I have never personally dealt with a call. One of my co-workers dealt with a call w/ someone who was standing on a cliff. He said, so what do you see? He figured it out by the surrounding area. They saved her.” This quote depicts that suicide can be similar to Apartheid. They can be similar because of the secrecy that goes with it. Apartheid began to fall apart due to international attention, so the government was trying to hide from publicity. This is similar to how the person in the call didn’t want attention and was trying obscure where she was from the person on the other end.
When asked about volunteering Esty replied, “You have to do 200 hours of volunteer experiences. B/c of this my brother this drew me in.” This quote explains that suicide can have a ripple effect that doesn’t always result in someone becoming suicidal. Esty’s brother committed suicide. Instead of increasingly contemplating suicide or attempting suicide herself, Esty felt empowered and decided she wanted to help. Her brother’s suicide affected her, but in a positive way.
When asked about her brother’s suicide Esty replied “He was 23. And it was pretty much out of the blue. The aftermath was hard to believe in. he was the superstar of the family. He was a year older than I was.” This quote shows that depression isn’t always easy to spot. She described her brother as the superstar of her family. He was successful and young and no one detected any sign of depression. Yet secretly he was suffering from depression. When talking about suicide and self harm, Esty said, “So someone who is self-harm versus who is Suicidal. It ranges.” This quote shows that self harm doesn’t always lead to suicide. People often seem to link self-harm to suicide. Suicidal people don’t always self-harm, and people who self harm may see it as a way of relieving pain, gaining attention or expressing themselves.
