The most important personal quality needed in a social movement is to have passion about what one is fighting for. During Apartheid, the government persisted in inflicting a segregative habitat. The anti-Apartheid activists had a passion for abolishing these rules. They did things like participate in boycotts, protests and other revellions. This was all possible because of their passion for the end of Apartheid. Esty was very passionate about helping suicide. Her brother committed suicide and so she decided she want to help. Now she works for San Francisco’s Suicide Prevention’s crisis line. Esty said, “I do tgus 4 hours a week. I also have personal experiences with suicide. My brother committed suicide 5 years ago.” This shows passion because she works for this for 4 hours on top of being a college student and has personal connections with this cause. The reason this quality is need in many situations that if you are not passionate you will loose interest and perseverance in the social movement. When dealing with a social movement, there’s a lot of controversy and strength needed which derives from passion.

To create change in each movement, the strategy mobilizing and gaining allies used in both movements. During Apartheid, anti- apartheid activists in America- allies, boycotted in America to publicize Apartheid in South Africa. This was an example of gaining allies because the Americcans demonstrated this to gain attention and allies, and they were already allies themselves. During the interview with suicide hotline volunteer, Esty Goodspeed she stated that she goes and talks to schools and they hand out flyers, etc. This is an example of gaining allies because they are going to places affected and eager to help

Social ignorance in both movements has been an injustice. During Apartheid, people continued to ignore the racism, violence and other oppression that took place. Apartheid went on for decades, and to an extent this oppression was ignored until it was abolished. In the suicide movement, suicide is also often ignored. In the U.S., there are more suicides than homicides, yet suicides are more obscured from media, thus suicide has also been ignored.
